The Film Jedi

My imagination has a tendency to get away from me...

Pew Pew Pew….

Well, its that time of year again. Yet another over commercilized holiday takes over the masses. The stores have had displays out since mid January and I saw my first valentine sent across someones facebook wall on January 30th. A whole TWO WEEKS before the holiday.

Pathetic.

Ok, a holiday celebrating love between two people sounds kinda romantic. If not for the fact that at this point is just another fabricated celebration manufactured by American Greetings company to sell cards and cheap chocolate. In theory you spend your day with your loved one, buy them a mushy card, some chocolate and flowers. The guys gets the girl jewelry or something and you spend alot of money on a fancy dinner at some posh restaurant. You then finish the evening most likely either by making out or wearing a wine hangover that carries you into the next day. If your lucky the whole thing pulls together into the most romantic thing ever truly symbolizing your love for one another.

As far as I’m concerned, this sounds like an awful way to show your love for someone. You shouldn’t need a specific occasion to show your love for them. If you do take the time to celebrate Valentines day, spend it being as spontaneous and unorthodox as possible. Don’t buy any cards. Dont buy jewelry. Don’t buy flowers.

Just spend your time together without having to spend money on the usual propaganda. Find interesting activities you can do. Do whatever you feel like. Feel free to be spontaneous. Eat dinner at home together. Watch a movie. Hang out with friends. Do something you wouldn’t usually do.  Make it all worthwhile but dont try too hard. The harder you try the more your valentines day will suck. I’m not saying don’t put in effort, I’m saying don’t try to force your day to perfectly fit every romantic thing you imagine it to be. Chances are you’ll only be disappointed.

All this of course comes from a single male sitting behind a computer screen but take my advice. You might just have the best valentines day ever.

On the other hand if your single like me, spend it your own way. I plan to spend my day after school melting chocolate hearts together with a laser and listening to music. I’ll read my inevitable valentines messages and talk to friends. But for me it honestly won’t be much different than any other day. It will just be February 14th, 2012.

Yet another year and yet another fuck not really given. I don’t need a relationship to be happy. I know some people spend their day moping about not having a special someone. But moping was never my thing. Sometimes you have to make your own fun.

So heres to a happy Valentines day. May yours be wonderful regardless of how you choose to spend it. Carpe diem and dont let it be boring.
